Shirodhara

Shirodhara: Relaxation Therapy

Also known as “Bliss Therapy,Shirodhara is a warm oil treatment over the forehead. This Ayurvedic treatment is known to calm the mind, making it an ideal treatment for those who suffer from modern ailments of feeling stressed out and mentally exhausted. Shiro means head, and dhara means dripping oil as if a thread. Shirodhara as a treatment consists of a stream of oil constantly running over the forehead. Traditionally, the oil is run from a copper vessel held about 6 to 8″ above the forehead. The purpose of Shirodhara is to calm the nervous system. It will leave you with a sensation of deep relaxation, inner calm and peace.

Shirodhara works on the pineal gland or ‘ajna marma’, an area where nerves are highly concentrated.  The warm herbal oil saturates the forehead and scalp and penetrates into the nervous system, which helps the mind to slow down and rest similar to deep meditation. According to Ayurveda Shirodhara is beneficial for Vata and Pitta dosha.  When out of balance, Vata dosha exhibits as fear, insecurity, worry, racing thoughts. Out of balance Pitta dosha exhibits as anger, irritability, frustration, judgmental, and hyper focused.

Shirodhara reestablishes the functional integrity between all doshic subtypes which helps alleviate stress, caused by prana vayu, sadhaka pitta, and tarpaka kapha imbalances. Most importantly, Shirodhara can help synchronize alpha brain waves, enhance blood circulation to the brain, and improve mental clarity and help to release deeply trapped toxins.

Additional benefits of Shirodhara include:

Oil and Hair Post-Treatment:

We recommend that you keep the oil on your hair for a minimum of two hours to receive the full energetic benefits of the herbs to calm the mind and nervous system. The easiest way to remove the oil from your hair is to add the shampoo to your hair before adding water. The shampoo will grab hold of the oil so it can be easily rinsed out.
